Nike Advertisements

Image
Jack Herrera 12/16/18 Nike and their Advertisements Nike is a very popular company, according to statistica.com they brought in 36.4 billion dollars in sales in 2018. How does Nike do this? First lets look at their ads. One of their most popular ads was the 30th anniversary of the Just Do It campaign, the crazy dreams one. This ad was very popular as it has 27 million views on YouTube but it also caused a lot of controversy because of Colin Kaepernick's recent dispute. However the advertisement appeals to your emotions. It makes you want to be bigger than what your dreams desire, it motivates you to make you feel like you can do anything. This causes the audience to begin to think that Nike can allow them to do anything since the people in the video that are accomplishing something are wearing Nike products. When I watched the advertisement, it made me feel motivated and that I can do anything. Just Do It advertisements all try to motivate you, another advertisement was Kyri...

Commercial Food vs Reality

Image
Jack Herrera 12/16/18 Commercial Food vs Reality Does anyone else ever wonder why the food in the commercials looks so much better than in reality? I thought about this, why do the burgers always look so juicy and delicious? How is that ice cream surviving the studio lights? How is that turkey perfectly cooked? These are questions I always ask myself. I decided to lurk in the media for any answers I can find and I found a lot. We are constantly being deceived by these companies and there brilliant ways to endorse their products. The foamy beer that any football dad desires on a Sunday evening is actually just dish soap mixed with beer. The foam is created with the dish soap, without the dish soap when you would pour a beer into a glass it doesn't foam. The burger that has the patty looking as if it descended from Heaven into the commercial was actually covered in vegetable oil to make the patty look juicy. The perfectly roasted turkey in the commercials is actually not cooke...

My Recent Encounter with Marketing

Image
Jack Herrera 12/9/18 YouTube Advertisement About ten minutes ago I was looking on YouTube for an ad I saw yesterday. It was one of those ads with the Christmas cards and the kid making someone's day better, anyways back to the point. I found the video I was looking for and when I clicked on I was taken to an ad. I wasn't paying attention to the ad and I was waiting for the video to let me skip the ad until I heard something familiar. I heard the words "business" and "marketing." I immediately began watching the ad. I soon realized that this advertisement was targeting me. It was advertising a business class for people who want to improve their business and it was talking about market segmentation as well as how to target consumers. The interesting thing was, I looked up what those were just an hour prior to viewing this ad. Usually, I have no problem with people who target me with advertisements because they're just trying to be more successful an...

Psychographics

Image
Jack Herrera 12/9/18 Psychographics, what is it? When I first heard the word psychographics, I had no clue what it meant. What is it? According to Dan Shewan's 9 Mind- Bending Ways to Use Psychographics in Your Marketing article it is the "study of people's attitudes and interests, often studied in conjunction with typical demographic data to build more complete profiles of target markets and audiences." The purpose of psychographics is to create a better profile of the consumer that is most likely going to buy your product. It is mostly used for marketing research for companies that want to have the best advertisements. Psychographics focuses on the consumers values, emotions, their interests, etc. According to Claire Boyte- White's article Which businesses use market segmentation? the businesses that use psychographics and target consumers are "skin care, hair care, beauty product manufacturers, car companies, clothing and apparel suppliers, financia...

Different Perspectives, same Story

Image
Jack Herrera 12/2/18 Two Very Different Perspectives It is not unusual to find biased opinions in the news. They actually happen more frequently than not. There is a tiny percentage of news outlets that aren't biased at all. A great example for news outlets that are biased are CNN and FOX news. One topic that I found was quite interesting was the articles both of these news outlets made on the H.R. 1 bill. The title of the article coming from FOX is "Dems target Trump tax returns in first bill under house majority" and he title of the article coming from CNN is "House Democratic priorities in new Congress: Trump tax returns and tackling corruption". Already before I could even read the article I already knew which sides the two news outlets are on and that these articles are most likely going to be biased. When there is any kind of bias opinion or information in an article, the article already starts to lose it's purpose to the reader. I know this bec...

Response to Politics and the English Language

Image
12/2/18 Selfishness with Language Language can be used for many things. It can be used to teach someone, it can be used to hurt someone mentally, it can be used to flirt with someone and etc. However, language can be used to deceive someone. In "Politics and the English Language" George Orwell argues that language is not a natural growth and it's a tool that humans use for their own purposes. I agree and disagree with this statement, language was simply created by early civilizations to communicate with one another. Since language has been created it has evolved and changed over time. English was created and based upon several other languages. Language also adapts to our needs, for example when you text someone you may use abbreviations such as "ttyl" (talk to you later) and "wyd" (what are you doing). These new adaptations to language help us communicate faster to one another while also communicating easily. As the demand f...
