My Recent Encounter with Marketing

YouTube Advertisement

About ten minutes ago I was looking on YouTube for an ad I saw yesterday. It was one of those ads with the Christmas cards and the kid making someone's day better, anyways back to the point. I found the video I was looking for and when I clicked on I was taken to an ad. I wasn't paying attention to the ad and I was waiting for the video to let me skip the ad until I heard something familiar. I heard the words "business" and "marketing." I immediately began watching the ad. I soon realized that this advertisement was targeting me. It was advertising a business class for people who want to improve their business and it was talking about market segmentation as well as how to target consumers. The interesting thing was, I looked up what those were just an hour prior to viewing this ad. Usually, I have no problem with people who target me with advertisements because they're just trying to be more successful and I have no issue with that. However this kind of bugged me because I just looked up something about the same topic and now I feel that I am going to get flooded with advertisements about business. This also reminded me of a discussion I had in my critical thinking class on how companies sell your information to other companies that want to advertise their products to you. To conclude this new encounter with the marketing world has begun to make me question what marketing really is.

  1. I hate when I get ads based on things that I just watched/read about, but It's such a smart tactic for businesses to use. I mean it served its purpose in your case. They took your recent searches and provided ads based on those and those ads grabbed your attention. Also, It's funny that you got an ad about ads while trying to search up an ad.
