My Relationship with Media

The media and I have an on and off relationship. The media is very useful, it can be used as a tool of knowledge. I look up words I have never heard of and I receive definitions right away. I can research certain topics for projects that will help me learn more about the topic. There are plenty of other ways the media is useful, however it also can waste our time. I have social media but I don't like it. Although I use it to stay in touch with my friends and to stay connected, it consumes quite a bit of my time. Time that I could be doing homework, time that I could be practicing waterpolo, and time that I could be hanging out with my family. Social media has it's pros and cons. It provides us with easier ways to connect with our friends in the blink of an eye. However social media has a few cons. One is. it consumes time (like I have previously mentioned). Another is, it can start to create false standards, the amount of likes you get on your most recent Instagram post has to relate with how many followers you have. The amount of followers you have should be equal to or more than your friends, if it's not than you are "lesser" than your friends. Coming from my past experiences with social media, people including myself get anxious when they don't get enough likes or have enough followers. To conclude my relationship with the media can be good and it can be bad. It just depends on how I use it.

  1. I really like the point that you made about how the media is a great educational tool because I agree that its usefulness often goes overlooked. I find it surprising to think that even to, "look up words I have never heard of and I receive definitions right away" is still a distraction to what I was doing before. The media is distraction, like falling into rabbit holes of information more interesting than that homework you were doing. I feel like this immediate gratification of learning something new is still a part of the problem, especially because it makes us feel productive, even wasting ten minutes to watch a fun philosophy video (or something informative like that) makes you feel smarter and successful, when truly, that time was wasted.
